A Country Rag

Note: The Dedication, "For my Mother and Stepfather," derives from an extant letter. Victim of one of my mother's campaigns, a man-love of my grandmother's wrote her in the early 1940s trying to straighten out and convey the truth of things, calling my mother 'a spoiler.' Nobody and nothing was really important but Dorothy Scranton Gerlach Alterio Baillie and what she (and her later husband, my criminal stepfather) wanted, with aggressively manipulative zeal and without law or good will, for herself and others. The remainder of the title references my committed intent to have for myself through honorably diligent hard work "The American Dream" of a paid-for home and furnishings, land and vehicle, solid investments toward later retirement income, and a self-sustainingly useful and successful small commercial business.
