Ode to an Ode

Free verse is the jazz of poetry
making love to the sounds
and meanings of words
strung winding on phrases
pregnant of semantics and syntax
sensing a true beat
from the rhythm of life
caught in the essence of a verbal hymn,
a glyph for the graphic mind
etching a hint of the unknown
and unknowable, human and divine,
biblically storied,
a lovers prayer,
perfunctory and profound,
touching the sacred orb,
sordid to soaring,
delightfull and morbidly frightening,
transcending lingua platz
for a home all its own,
a notecard from the author
visiting and
sitting in the band of you.
